Sweet potato sticks are tossed with olive oil, seasoned with spices, and baked until crispy. This Sweet Potato Fries recipe is easy to make, tastes incredibly delicious, and just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, these fries are really HEALTHY too! Now that’s a combination you don’t find every day!
I’ve been an avid gardener for years but growing up in Germany and England and then living the past several years in the Pacific Northwest, there were some veggies, like sweet potatoes, that weren’t possible to grow in those zones. So when we moved to the South last year you can bet I lost no time in planting a large patch of sweet potatoes!
Fast forward through the growing season and a few days I ago I pulled up my very first homegrown sweet potatoes – EEK, so exciting! And they were HUGE. The largest so far was a whopping 6 pounds. As I held it in my hands I was immediately struck by a vision of crispy sweet potato fries….and that’s exactly how we celebrated our very first harvest!
Sweet potatoes are a powerhouse of nutrition. They’re high in fiber and very rich in beta-carotene, which converts into vitamin A and supports both vision and the immune system. In fact, one sweet potato provides 400% of your daily vitamin A needs. They are also high in antioxidants which promote a healthy gut, brain, and protect the body from free radical damage.
So if you can take a healthy vegetable like that and turn it into a delicious crispy, oven-baked snack like Sweet Potato fries, who wouldn’t want to do that? Pass the fries, please!
We’re using a simple seasoning blend for these sweet potato fries but feel free to change up the flavor profile. Here are a few additional seasonings blends you can use to spice up your fries:
Sweet Potato Fries Recipe
Let’s get started!
Preheat the oven to 425 F. If using convection/fans (that’s what I use for these) preheat it to 400 F.
Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them lengthwise into 1/4 inch slices. Then slice the rounds vertically into to 1/4 inch strips. Place the sweet potato strips into a large bowl.
Drizzle over the olive oil and toss to even coat.
Combine the seasonings in a small bowl, pour it over the fries, and toss until they’re evenly coat.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Spread the sweet potatoes out evenly and in a single layer. You will likely need a second baking sheet for this in which case be sure to place the second sheet two rungs below the first one to allow for adequate air flow.
Bake the sweet potato fries for 20 minutes, then use a metal spatula to carefully turn the fries over, again making sure they are spread out in a single layer. Move any browned fries along the edges towards the middle of the tray. If using two trays of fries, swap oven rack positions. Continue to bake another 20 minutes or until the fries are lightly browned and crispy (time will vary depending on the thickness of the fries).
Serve immediately.
Enjoy!
